About us

Culture at Home is an African American homeschool support group in the Washington D.C., Maryland and Virginia area with an emphasis on the older homeschooled student and for families concerned with the healthy well-being and academic guidance of their African-American child. African American Homeschoolers often make great sacrifices in order to provide their children with the best education and relevant academic exposure . We are doing this with very little support from society and sometimes without the approval and understanding of our own families. The purpose of this group is to provide an educational outreach support program and to supplement the curriculum of homeschoolers with children ages 10-18 (grades 5-12).
Rising Words, Rising Images is an important "Culture at Home" monthly book discussion group for young people ages 13-18. It is a creative introduction to the great diversity that exists in our nation, which will help children view the world more openly. Through classics and world literature, this discussion group is dedicated to teaching children to value diversity and to grow into productive, caring citizens of a global society seeking to advance the dignity of young people around the world teaching the importance of diversity, tolerance and promoting mutual respect among all. We encourage participation in the Annual African American Read-In. We offer Fridays for Science at The Smithsonian Natural History for grades 9-12, Civics and History Workshops, an American Girl Book Club for ages 8-12, Creative Writing Workshops, college fairs, seminars and tutorial information. Our vision is that both the parent/teacher and the child/student are lifelong learners. We are not a chat group.

Robin (Sarah's mom) raved about the club you moderated last year. My daughter loves the American Girl books and as a homeschooler, I'd love to expose her to the historical and natural studies your group has done in the past.  (Parent)

Ms. Pier,

I just wanted to take the time to say thank you for all that you have done for me, especially in writing. I just started English 111 at Northern Virginia Community College in the beginning of January. So far we have had 3 quizzes and a big essay on fresnel lenses and I got an A on all of them! So i know that I owe a large portion of that credit to you. So thank you very much for pushing me very hard.

Thank you,

Justin (Student)

I wanted to say thank you Pier, because of you writing became a very important part of our homeschool curriculum. Thanks again! I will update you soon about other scholarships, the colleges they were accepted to and the college they will attend in the fall.

Dear Mrs. Pier Penic,

"I just wanted to let you know that I truly appreciate all that you have done. The workshop

Power of the Written Word sponsored by the NMAAHC was wonderful. Each summer your

workshops have become even more profound than the previous year.  Every student immersed

in to literature through topics, presenters, docents and museum exhibits.  For the last four

years, my son has participated in your creative writing workshops. Every year that Quentin has

participated in a creative workshop, that you have facilitated or sponsored, his ability to write

has vastly improved.  You know, as a homeschooling mother we always want our children to

gain or improve on a skill that will aid in the advancement of their education. You have inspired

students through encouragement and assistance. Mrs. Penic please continue to host the

workshops because you and I both know there is a serious need in the area of writing in our

community. You are an amazing and dedicated educator.  Thank you for all you do!"
